Stand Up for Your Health: 5 Ways to Reduce Sitting Time at Work!

A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine estimated the proportion of deaths attributable to that "chair effect" in the population of 54 countries. Over 60 percent of people worldwide spend more than three hours a day sitting down, and it was estimated to be behind 3.8 percent of deaths annually.

Although this is not a causal relationship, researchers calculated that reducing our sitting time by two hours could mean a 2.3 percent decrease in mortality. Even a modest reduction by half an hour a day could help! Here are five ways to reduce sitting time: 

  • bike to work 
  • take frequent breaks during work (and walk) 
  • turn your lunch break into a workout at the gym
  • use a standing desk  
  • track your steps to self-motivate

Great tip, Mei Marcie! I am guilty of sitting too long when I'm working. Have to remind myself to take a break and walk a bit. I'm actually guilty of it right now! So taking a break....
