Melanoma: Here's How to Spot a Bad Spot That Could be Skin Cancer!

Three years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 1B melanoma after examining a mole on my shin and noticing it looked darker and larger than usual. So when I went to my dermatologist, she took a biopsy and found that it was melanoma. Fortunately, I caught it early, and even though I had to have surgery to reconstruct my shin and some lymph nodes removed to make sure the cancer hadn't spread, I was incredibly lucky it wasn't worse.

Early detection is key! And it's as easy as ABC (D and E)! Pay attention to moles or growths that are asymmetrical, have an irregular border, exhibit changes in color, have a diameter larger than the size of a pencil eraser or have evolved in size or thickness. If you notice one or more of these signs, see your healthcare provider.
