Does Your Child Have Mumps? 3 Early Symptoms to Look For!

Mumps are in the news again. What symptoms should parents look for? The first symptoms of mumps include:

  • low-grade fever
  • headache
  • loss of appetite

Early on, a person with mumps can have just a genuine feeling of being “unwell.” As the virus progresses, the salivary and parotid glands may swell, but this only happens in 31 to 65 percent of the cases. Some people have no symptoms and others have respiratory symptoms.

It is important to keep a person with mumps isolated since the virus is contagious. The swollen glands that come with mumps doesn't happen until a person is already contagious.
