Country Fried Steak Strips Recipe Is Southern Comfort (4 Ingredients, 20 Minutes) Beef Dinner Budget Recipes Low Sodium Recipes High Protein Recipes Low Sugar Recipes
I don't fry often. But being from the south, every once in a while you have to chicken-fry something. These simple country fried steak strips are perfect because you don't have to create a dredging station – everything is stirred together in one bowl. Another bonus of this chicken-fried steak recipe is that it's on the table in 20 minutes.
To make these crispy fried steak fingers you need just four ingredients. Here is your short shopping list: sirloin steak, buttermilk, flour (all-purpose or gluten-free) and vegetable oil. The steak is cut into strips, soaked in buttermilk then coated in flour. Be sure to season with salt and pepper, then fry in hot oil until golden and crispy. Delish. This recipe would also work with chicken, pork or venison.
Don't have buttermilk? Here's how to make homemade buttermilk with two ingredients in five minutes.
Serve these low-sodium fried steak strips with your favorite side dishes. I recommend southern squash and onions, quick succotash, mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese. I served the high-protein recipe with zucchini and potato salad this time. This is a dang good southern dinner for the family!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 3
Ingredients
- 1 pound sirloin steak, cut into strips (about 3 cups)
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup flour (all-purpose or gluten-free flour)
- vegetable oil, for frying
Here's how to make it:
- Cut the steak into strips. Put the steak strips into a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add the buttermilk and stir to coat. Add the flour and stir to completely coat the meat. If the meat is sticky, add more flour. (Use your favorite steak for this recipe. I used sirloin steak, but you could use flank steak, round steak, ribeye steak or London broil. Whatever you prefer! To make the steak easier to slice, place it in the freezer for 30 minutes.)
- Heat about 1/2 an inch of oil in a cast iron skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Add the steak strips in a single layer (don't crowd the pan) to the hot oil and cook until golden brown on one side. Carefully flip the meat over and cook until golden brown on the other side.
- Remove to a paper towel. Sprinkle with a little more salt, if desired. (You could use the steak drippings and make a cream gravy.)
