Hamburger (aka ground beef) and potato casseroles are a classic! Grandmas and moms all over had their own special recipe and way of preparing this iconic casserole. But the main players were always the same: ground beef, potatoes and cheese. Lots of cheese.

This easy old-fashioned hamburger casserole recipe is a satisfying combination of ground beef, russet potatoes, onion, garlic, cream of mushroom soup, chicken broth, heavy cream, paprika and cheddar cheese. The ingredients for this high-protein recipe are layered in a baking dish before being covered and baked until the potatoes are tender. (Check out the health benefits of protein.)

Variations: Ground turkey could be substituted for the ground beef. For some added nutrition, add some mushrooms when you cook the ground beef, onions and garlic.

Ingredients

• 1 pound ground beef
• 3 russet potatoes, sliced thin
• 1 onion, chopped or sliced thin
• 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
• 11 ounces (2 cans) cream of mushroom soup
• 1 cup chicken broth
• 1/2 cup heavy cream 
• 1 tablespoon paprika
• 2 - 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese 

Here's how to make it: 

1. In a skillet, cook the ground beef, onions and garlic until meat is cooked through and onions are soft, about 5 minutes.
2. In a bowl, stir together the soup, broth, heavy cream and paprika. Season with salt and pepper. 
3. Put half of the potatoes onto the bottom of a lightly oiled 13x9-inch baking pan. Top with half of the meat mixture. Pour half of the soup mixture over the top. Repeat the layers. Top with the shredded cheese. (You could put some cheese in the layers as well, if desired. Instead of russet potatoes, you could use Yukon gold potatoes. If you're not a fan of cheddar cheese, try mozzarella, Monterey Jack, colby-jack, gruyere, an Italian or Mexican blend, or pepper-jack for a little spice. )
4. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until potatoes are tender. Uncover during the last 10 minutes of baking. Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
