Simple Southern Tomato Sandwich Recipe: A Nostalgic Sandwich Recipe From the South Sandwiches Lunch

Ever get a craving for something? That happened to me this weekend. I needed a good, old-fashioned southern tomato sandwich. For many southerners, this sandwich recipe is nostalgic because they grew up eating them in their lunch boxes at school or making one for lunch, dinner or for a snack as an adult. Simple. Easy. Delicious.

Tomato sandwiches are usually made with thick slices of vine-ripened tomatoes (or as close as you can get). The best available to me right now was juicy grape tomatoes. Use whatever tomato is the most ripe until those tomato plants start producing those tomatoes of summer.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: Makes 1 sandwich

Ingredients

Here's how to make it:

  1. Top the bread with the mayonnaise.
  2. Add the sliced tomatoes.
  3. Season liberally with fresh cracked black pepper and sea salt.

Note: When I'm feeling rebellious, I'll sometimes add lettuce and sliced red onions.

Ahhhh ...I love these. Im not good with getting the right tomato though, wish I had a garden. I've read recipes for these over the years and it always make me smile as there are some that believe they are only good with Duke's mayonnaise or squishy white bread

Yes! And you need "squishy" bread for BLTs, too. Though I buy Hellman's. :-)
