Recipe Notes

  • You can use gluten-free flour if you want this recipe to be gluten-free.
  • For fewer tears when working with onions, put the onions in the refrigerator to get cold before you grate them.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer.

Here's how to make it:

  1. Put the grated potatoes and onions into a large mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, if desired. Add the dried mint, oil and eggs. Mix well to combine.
  2. Pour the mixture into a buttered round cake pan, cast iron skillet or a round casserole dish. Press to flatten the mixture, then sprinkle with the flour and dot with the butter.
  3. Bake in a preheated 450-degree F oven for about 45 minutes, or until cooked through and golden.

There is a mistake in the name of the dish. It is called pataTnik. The author missed the second t in the word that comes from the word potato, so it's originally called patatnik.
