To make this basic spritz cookie recipe you will need just a few ingredients. Here's what you need to grab from the pantry and fridge: butter, sugar, flour, salt, eggs, vanilla extract and optional food coloring and decorations like holiday sprinkles.

  • You can use our favorite baking extract flavor instead of plain vanilla or almond extract. Try lemon, coconut, cake mix or rum extract.
  • You can buy battery operated cookie presses and manual cookie presses. Both work great, but see which you prefer.

Here's how to make it: 

  1. Cream together the butter and sugar with an electric mixer. 
  2. Stir in the flour, salt, egg and extract. If using food coloring, add a few drops to get desired color.
  3. Put the dough into a cookie press. Make shapes on a cookie sheet. Decorate as desired.
  4. Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for about 5 to 7 minutes or until they are set but not brown. Remove and cool. If decorating after baking, let them cool completely.
