Remember squirting that bottle of chocolate sauce on your ice cream and watching it magically harden? That magic shell has mesmerized kids and adults for years. Guess what? You can make ice cream magic at home with this DIY magic shell recipe – and it's so easy.

All you need to make this magic shell chocolate sauce is chopped chocolate and coconut oil. The two ingredients are melted together in a saucepot on the stove, then allowed to cool slightly before being drizzled on that ice cream. You can also make this homemade chocolate sauce in the microwave by melting the ingredients together in 30-second intervals until melted.

If you prefer white chocolate, go for it, but reduce the amount of coconut oil for 1/4 cup. Squirt this homemade magic shell ice cream topping all over your favorite ice cream for dessert. Delish.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 4 minutes

Total Time: 6 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped chocolate (milk chocolate or semisweet chocolate)
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil

Here's how to make it on the stovetop:

  1. Put the chocolate and coconut oil into a pot. Cook over low heat until melted, stirring constantly, about 4 minutes.
  2. Pour the melted chocolate into a bowl and allow to cool for about 2 minutes.
  3. Drizzle over ice cream or dip ice cream cones into the sauce. It will harden in about 30 to 60 seconds.

Here's how to make it in the microwave:

  1. Put the chocolate and coconut oil into a microwave-safe bowl. Cook in 30 second intervals until completely melted.
  2. Allow to cool for about 2 minutes, then pour over ice cream.

Note: If using white chocolate, decrease the amount of coconut oil to 1/4 cup.

Can I store leftovers in the fridge and reheat in the microwave/cool again, for future use? Thanks!
Donna John
I have never tried that. My suggestion would be to cut the recipe in half.
