We can thank a bar in Brussels for the cocktail known as the Black Russian. According to Liquor.com, in the late 1940s, Perle Mesta, the American ambassador to Luxembourg, was hanging out in the bar at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. The hotel’s bartender, Gustave Tops, decided to make a signature drink for her. Ta-da! It was the Black Russian. A Black Russian is simply coffee liqueur and vodka (no Russian secrets here!).
You’ll need:
- 1 part coffee liqueur (like Kahlua)
- 2 parts vodka
- ice
Here’s how to make it:
- Combine the coffee liqueur and vodka in a drink shaker.
- Pour into a cocktail glass filled with ice. Serve.
