If you have a family full of banana bread lovers, then you need to try this recipe. Because my family is crazy about banana bread, I have made gazillions of banana bread recipes – and this one is our very favorite. My husband said this banana bread recipe made with Greek yogurt is "happiness on a plate!"
It's funny how tiny tweaks to a recipe can make a big difference. For example, in this delicious banana bread recipe, by using white sugar and Greek yogurt, the bread turned out perfectly moist with just the right amount of sweetness. After enjoying the heady aroma of banana bread baking in the oven, my family inhaled the warm loaf so quickly that they immediately asked me to make another one (insisting on the exact same recipe)!
This tasty banana bread recipe incorporates the health benefits of Greek yogurt, which is one of my favorite sources of healthy protein. Then there are the overripe bananas (check out the health benefits of bananas), and the optional semisweet chocolate chips and walnuts, which have antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, among the other health benefits of walnuts.
To make this amazing banana bread recipe, you'll need these simple ingredients: overripe bananas, butter, plain Greek yogurt, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, flour, baking soda and salt. The chocolate chips and chopped walnuts are optional. You make the easy batter then bake the loaf until it's cooked through and golden brown.
Serve this lovely banana bread recipe for breakfast or for brunch, as an afternoon snack or even for dessert. Hopefully, it'll become your family's favorite banana bread, too!

Total Time: 55 to 65 minutes
Servings: 10
Ingredients
- 3 medium overripe bananas, mashed
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups flour (all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips (optional)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Recipe Notes
- You can use all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour. I used GF 1:1 flour.
- Instead of Greek yogurt, you could use sour cream, if preferred.
- You can use granulated sugar or cane sugar in this recipe (I used cane sugar).
- I added semisweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts, but those are optional.
- Store the bread in an airtight container.
Here's how to make it:
- In a large mixing bowl, add the mashed bananas, melted butter, Greek yogurt and eggs. Whisk to combine.
- Add the vanilla extract and the sugar. Whisk to combine.
- Add the flour, baking soda and salt. Stir to combine.
- Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts, if using.
- Evenly spread the batter into an 8x4-inch loaf pan that's been lined with parchment paper.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for about 45 to 55 minutes, or until it passes the toothpick test. (If the loaf is getting too brown on top, you can cover it with aluminum foil.)
- Allow loaf to cool a bit before slicing and serving.
