Casseroles are always a fan favorite, especially ground beef casseroles. With the popularity of my simple Amish hamburger steak bake recipe, I decided to change things up a bit and add potatoes, onions and cheese. The result? Another hamburger steak bake casserole recipe that was husband and wife approved!
To make this Amish casserole you will need just a short list of simple ingredients. Here is your shopping list: ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, seasoned salt, milk, flour, potatoes, onion and cheddar cheese. The patties are quickly browned in a skillet (remember, brown takes you to flavortown), then layered with the potatoes and onions. A quick pan gravy is cooked in the same skillet then poured over the patties. Bake for about 40 minutes and dinner is done.
Cooking Note: Next time I will just put all the potatoes and onions on the bottom. Layering isn't really necessary because you don't want to cover up the patties. But that's your call.
This could be a complete high-protein dinner, but I like to add a fresh vegetable or salad on the side for some freshness. This comfort food recipe is a delicious weekday dinner or weekend meal for company. No one will walk away without a full belly!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 50 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt (optional)
- 2 cups milk (divided)
- 1/4 cup flour
- 4 - 5 potatoes, sliced thin
- 1 onion, sliced thin
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Here's how to make it:
- Put the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder and seasoned salt in a mixing bowl. Season with a little salt and black pepper.
- Mix well to combine.
- Shape into six patties.
- Put the patties into a hot skillet and cook until browned on the bottom.
- Flip the patties over and brown on the other side. (The patties will not be cooked through at this point.)
- Put half of the sliced potatoes and half of the sliced onions into a baking dish. Season with a little garlic powder, onion powder and seasoned salt, if desired. (You can use small russets or large red, white or Yukon gold potatoes. I used five red potatoes.)
- Put the patties on top.
- Add the remaining potatoes and onions. (Alternately, you could just put all the potatoes and onions on the bottom and skip "layering.")
- To the same skillet (leave the drippings), add the flour and 1 cup of the milk.
- Whisk until smooth.
- Add the remaining 1 cup of milk and whisk until it thickens and becomes a gravy. Season with salt and black pepper.
- Pour the gravy over the patties, potatoes and onions.
- Cover the baking dish with a lid or aluminum foil.
- Bake in a preheated 375-degree F oven for about 40 minutes, or until potatoes are tender. Top with the cheese and bake a couple minutes more until cheese melts. (Instead of cheddar cheese try gruyere, Swiss, Monterey Jack, pepper-jack or your favorite cheese blend. I like to sprinkle the top with parsley flakes for a little color.) Serve. Store the leftovers covered in the fridge and reheat in the microwave.
