One simple spice in your pantry or spice rack can change the way you cook – and also the way you think. My pantry is full of all different kinds of spices, and I'm always looking for new spices to try. When I ran across Curio Spice Co. and read their mission and scrolled through their spices, I knew I had to try some and immediately grabbed my credit card. A few days later, Magic Salt entered my life.
Curio Spice Co. is women owned and mission driven. Their mission is to "improve the lives of spice farmers by directly sourcing from small, sustainable farms. Inspire culinary creativity by crafting blends that celebrate unique flavors from around the world. We value organic, fair trade ingredients, supporting women and enriching our local community – and making sure we all have the chance to eat well."
My first recipe creation utilizing Magic Salt, which the company describes as a "smoky" and "sultry" spice that's a "blend of our favorite Turkish Maras chile flakes with smoked paprika, chipotle, cayenne and Maine sea salt," was this magic salmon patties recipe.
To make these crispy protein-rich salmon patties for dinner you will need a can of salmon, green onions, cornmeal, panko, an egg, mayonnaise and seasoned salt. The cornmeal is my way of adding a little bit of southern to these delicious salmon patties. This budget-friendly seafood dinner is on the table in about 15 minutes, and you get the health benefits of salmon.
Serve these salmon cakes for dinner with your favorite side dishes. I served mine with green peas, mashed sweet potatoes and yellow crookneck squash.
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 15 ounces (1 can) salmon, drained and flaked (see Recipe Notes)
- 3 green onions, chopped fine
- 1/4 cup cornmeal
- 1/4 cup panko
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons (heaping) mayonnaise
- 1/2 - 1 teaspoon Magic Salt (or your favorite seasoned salt)
Recipe Notes
- I used a little over a 1/2 teaspoon of Magic Salt. Next time, I will add the full 1 teaspoon.
- If you avoid canned salmon because it takes you forever to remove the bones, here’s a tip for you: crush the bones with your fingers when breaking up the salmon. The salmon bones literally turn to powder and disappear into the fish. The healthy bonus? The bones are full of bone-building calcium.
- Any easy way to prepare the canned salmon is by dumping it into a mesh strainer over the sink. Use your fingers to flake the salmon as it drains, breaking up (or removing if you prefer) the soft bones. I remove the skin.
- I whipped up an easy seasoned mayonnaise to top the salmon patties with by stirring together mayonnaise and Magic Salt. You could make this with your favorite seasoned salt.
Here's how to make it:
- Combine the salmon, onion, cornmeal, panko, egg and mayonnaise in a mixing bowl. Mix well.
- Add the seasoned salt, to taste, and mix again.
- Shape the mixture into patties. Sprinkle with more seasoned salt, if desired.
- Heat some cooking oil in a skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the salmon patties and cook until golden on one side. Flip the patties over and continue to cook until hot throughout and golden brown.
- Remove the patties to a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.
- Serve the patties with your favorite side dishes.
