Two local restaurants near me serve the most amazing green beans. One is a steakhouse and the other is a downhome, country restaurant. Both use the same ingredients, but they are slightly different because of how they're cooked. The steakhouse's green beans are crisper, while the country restaurant's beans are softer. While both are two of my favorite side dishes, I do like the softer green beans better. I think that's a southern thing.
If you're looking for a tasty new way to cook green beans, you need to try this recipe. All you need to make these amazing steakhouse green beans is fresh green beans (check out the health benefits of green beans), bacon, onion, brown sugar, hot sauce, salt and black pepper.
The bacon is cooked until crisp before you add the onion to soften it up a bit in the bacon fat. Throw in the green beans and just enough water to cover. Cook over high heat so the beans soften and the water starts to evaporate (you want it all gone in the end). Brown sugar, hot sauce, a little salt and black pepper are added about halfway through cooking. The end product is rich, slightly sweet and slightly spicy. Delicious!
Serve these skillet green beans as a side dish with beef, pork, chicken, lamb or your favorite protein.
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 to 40 minutes
Total Time: 40 to 50 minutes
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 pound green beans, ends trimmed (I leave my beans whole, but you can cut them into smaller pieces, if desired.)
- 5 - 6 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 - 3 tablespoons brown sugar (or more or less, to taste)
- hot sauce, to taste
Here's how to make it:
- Fry the bacon in a skillet until crisp, abut 5 minutes. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Add the green beans and stir for about 1 minute.
- Add just enough water to barely cover the green beans. Cook on high heat, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes.
- Add the brown sugar and a few shakes of hot sauce (or to taste). Continue to cook until almost all of the liquid has evaporated. Adjust the amount of brown sugar to suit your tastes. Start out with 1 tablespoon and add more. You can add, but you can't take it out.
- Season with a little salt and black pepper. You may not think the green beans will need additional salt because of the bacon. But while they don't need too much, they do need a little salt during cooking for the best end product. Taste and add more hot sauce and/or brown sugar, if needed. For even more flavor, add some minced garlic toward the end of cooking.
