Zadar, Croatia: Experience the Mystical Music of the Sea Organ by Sheri B Doyle

On the edge of the Adriatic Sea in Zadar, Croatia, people fill the steps leading into the water. Children can be seen laying down with their ears to the ground, listening through holes in glistening white stone. From morning until late at night people come and go from this area of Croatia along the Riva.
The view of the sea is beautiful here but most people have stopped to listen to the amazing “music” created by the Sea Organ. The Sea Organ is a series of 35 pipes underneath the stairs. They vary in length, diameter and pitch, all helping the “whistles” installed on them to create up five tones and seven chords. The bottom step allows the water and air to enter, and then the water is funneled through the pipes creating unique sounds.
Walking down the Riva, the faint sounds become more and more distinct the closer to the organ you walk. Once you reach the stairs the constant music becomes an enchanting backdrop for what Alfred Hitchcock once called “the most perfect sunset in the world."
