Make a Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger Like Roadhouse (It's Famous)! by Donna John

A restaurant in Bastrop, Texas, had been tempting my husband and I for a while. So on our trip home from Rocksprings, we decided to stop at Roadhouse instead of our regular Mexican restaurant. My husband was shocked when I looked at the menu for maybe 10 seconds and knew what I wanted (I usually study the menu like it’s a life or death decision). What got me? The words “One of Texas Monthly’s 50 Best Burgers in Texas!” Sold. I ordered the Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger. Right. Decision. Amazing. Here’s how you can make one similar at home.
- sourdough or jalapeno sourdough bun (or your favorite)
- ground beef (80/20 is the best for burgers)
- salt and pepper
- cream cheese (or whipped cream cheese)
- jalapenos, either roasted or fresh, thinly sliced
- condiments of choice: ketchup, mayo, mustard
Here’s how to make them:
- Shape your ground beef into patties. Season with salt and pepper. Grill to desired doneness.
- If using brick cream cheese, whip by hand until it's a little loose. If using whipped cream cheese from a tub, it’s ready to roll.
- If desired, throw buns on the grill for a minute or two to slightly toast.
- Assemble burger by placing meat on bottom bun, adding a heaping spoonful of cream cheese and topping with the jalapenos, lettuce and tomato. (You could also mix the jalapenos directly into the cream cheese.)
- Serve with condiments.
