Silky Skillet Cabbage Recipe With Bacon & Onion Is Downhome Delicious (4 Ingredients) by Donna John
Growing up, my mom called this dish "fried cabbage." Lots of bacon was fried up and then cabbage joined the party and was cooked down until soft and tender. The cabbage recipe was one of my favorites. With this southern cabbage recipe, I've added onion and a little butter, which makes the cabbage soft and silky on the tongue. So delicious!

Cabbage is a superfood – an often overlooked superfood, according to Brown University. "Cabbage. It’s one of those foods you don’t often think about, unless you’re making its famous companion, corned beef or whipping up a batch of creamy cole slaw for your next barbecue. The truth is this vegetable is versatile and packs a nutritional punch. Maybe cabbage deserves a little more attention." Read more about the health benefits of cabbage.

Cuisine: American / Southern
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20 to 25 minutes
Total Time: 25 to 30 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 1/2 head green cabbage, shredded
- 3 slices bacon
- 1/2 an onion, chopped
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 tablespoons butter
Here's how to make it:
- Cook the bacon in a skillet until crispy. Do not drain the bacon fat.
- Add the onion and cook, stirring, about 2 minutes.
- Add the cabbage and water.
- Cook, stirring often, until cabbage wilts and is very soft and tender, about 15 minutes. (If you like crisper cabbage, you can reduce the cooking time. If you need to add a little more water, go ahead. You want the water to evaporate but don't want the cabbage to stick.)
- Add the butter. Season with salt and black pepper.
- Cook until butter melts. Serve. Store any leftover cabbage in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat in the microwave. This recipe can easily be doubled, using the whole head of cabbage.
