How Often Should You Wash Blue Jeans? Denim Lovers, You May Be Surprised Fashion

Jeans are a staple in most wardrobes. You can dress them up and you can dress them down. But what about the wear and tear of jeans?

Basic denim material is pretty sturdy and durable, but more and more jeans are being made with stretch materials, being dyed or are sent through an enzyme wash. According to GarmentsMerchandising.com, there are eight types of denim:

  • colored denim
  • bubble gum denim
  • denim from fox fiber
  • crushed denim
  • vintage denim
  • ecru denim
  • marble denim
  • reverse denim

It is important to learn about your denim and know how often to wash your jeans in order to keep them looking new and to help our environment. The American Cleaning Institute states you should wash your jeans after three wearings. In an article from Independent, Chip Bergh from Levis claims you should never wash your jeans or at least "rarely." Most people fall in the middle of these two, including me.

Standard advice states you should wash your jeans when they either become visibly dirty or start to smell. But why not wash them every time you wear them? Well, the main reason is the maintain your jeans shape and color. Laundry detergents contain additives that can fade your jeans and change the integrity of the material. Secondly, each washing uses a lot of water and electricity. So, do your jeans and the earth a favor and wash only as needed.

I do not wash my jeans every time I wear them. I base it on how dirty they get, but do go as long as I can between washings so they last longer. Had no idea there were eight kinds of denim! Interesting. Welcome to the tribe, Lisa Mariscal ! Look forward to learning more from you.
