While babies usually grow out of thumbsucking, there are some negative effects if the thumbsucking continues past toddler age. Here are four reasons why it can be harmful!
- Dental Issues – Constant pushing of the thumb against the inside of the upper front teeth can lead to misalignment.
- Infection – Bacteria in the mouth gets into the skin where the thumb joins the skin and can cause infection.
- Illnesses – Touching shared toys and putting fingers in the mouth increases the chance of passing around germs that can lead to illnesses.
- Social Issues – Teasing sometimes happens to children who suck their thumbs past the toddler stage.
