Prescription Testosterone Product Risks: The FDA Has Issued Warnings by Dr. Shayna Mancuso

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced revised labeling and warnings for prescription testosterone products and related anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS). Currently, the FDA has approved the use of prescription testosterone products for men with low levels of the hormone due to certain medical conditions. AAS are also FDA-approved to treat delayed puberty and conditions that cause muscle loss such as AIDS or cancer.

However, the agency reports that testosterone and other AAS are increasingly being abused by adolescents, athletes and body builders. This abuse (usually at higher doses than what is typically prescribed) may be associated with serious adverse outcomes such as:

• heart attack
• heart failure
• stroke
• depression
• liver toxicity
• male infertility

The new labeling will raise awareness to the abuse potential of testosterone and AAS and the associated health risks.
