8 Back-to-School Tips for Parents Who Have Kids With Eczema

School presents a few areas that may trigger eczema for your child. Work with the school, if possible. Here are some suggestions!

  1. Sweat/Sports – Sweat or sweat residue left on the skin may irritate. Get extra time for showering or send a change of clothes. Have your child use a gentle cleanser and avoid soap.
  2. Dust – Dust mites are a common allergen for older kids. Ask for alternative cleaning duty to make sure your child's environment at school is as dust-mite free as possible.
  3. Uniform – Explore alternative material if your child’s uniform is "scratchy" and not cotton.
  4. Heat – If your child’s assigned seat is too hot or in/near sun, ask for a change.
  5. Swimming – If chlorine irritates, get a doctor exemption letter.
  6. Food – Have known food allergies in writing for your child’s school.
  7. Encourage your child to take responsibility for his or her skincare, too, like moisturizing and not scratching.
  8. For those with severe allergies, have an EpiPen ready.

Always talk to your child's school nurse with any concerns.
