Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, affects about 20 percent of children, and symptoms usually occur before the age of 5.

  • For children, house dust mites are a common allergen and other environmental triggers include mold, pet dander and pollen.
  • In younger children, food such as cow’s milk, eggs and peanuts are the more common allergens.
  • Other substances such as soap, detergents, rough wool clothing, fever/flu, sweat and stress can also trigger the rash.

Allergy testing, though not foolproof, can help parents manage the child’s eczema better.
