Conjunctivitis, better known as pinkeye, is very contagious if caused by a viral or bacterial infection. If your child has thick, yellowish or greenish continuous drainage, it’s most likely a bacterial infection and eye drops will help it clear up. Unfortunately, often it’s a viral infection and the only cure is time – antibiotic drops are not effective.

Your child will be contagious until the redness and discharge is gone. It is possible to have allergic conjunctivitis which is when the drainage is watery and clear and usually extremely itchy. This is not contagious.
