When Should a Child First See a Dentist? The Answer May Surprise You! Dental Health Kids' Health

It might feel silly taking a toothless toddler to the dentist, but you should! The American Dental Association recommends a first dental visit “within 6 months after the baby’s first tooth appears, but no later than the child’s first birthday.” Tooth decay can occur as soon as the first tooth emerges and good lifetime checkup habits are important. Keep in mind...

  • Pediatric dentists have at least two years of extra schooling and are trained to put kids at ease. They can recommend early intervention like fluoride treatments or dental sealants if needed.
  • Even baby teeth need to last a while, so it’s vital to take care of them. A first tooth can erupt as early as 6 months, but a final baby molar may not be shed for 12 years.

That’s a lot of years of dentist visits, so start early and keep it fun and exciting!
