Feeding Your Preemie: Breastfeeding May Give a Premature Baby's Brain a Boost Preemies

Breast is best for most babies, but this may be especially true for preemies. A study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting found that breast milk may help brain growth in premature babies.

With MRI scans, researchers found that babies who were fed breast milk had larger brain volumes. Infants in the study who had a daily diet that was at least 50 percent breast milk had more brain tissue and cortical surface area compared to other preemies that were given less breast milk.
