Easy Tornado Potato Recipe: Crispy Spiralized Potatoes Are Fun & Tasty Side Dishes Appetizers Vegetables

It's fun to take an ingredient we all know and love, and present it in an entirely new way. This easy tornado potato recipe is not hard to make, but will impress your family or guests!

Yellow potatoes (russet or large Yukon Gold) are skewered than carefully (very carefully!) cut with a sharp knife to form a spiralized potato. The potatoes are seasoned with a spice blend made with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, oregano and crushed red pepper flakes before being drizzled with olive oil and baked to golden, crispy perfection. Adjust the seasoning blend to suit your tastes by adjusting amounts and even changing up the herbs and spices.

These baked tornado potatoes can be served as a side dish with dinner or an appetizer. If serving as an appetizer, set out several dipping sauces like ketchup, Cajun dipping sauce, remouladewasabi mayonnaise or homemade ranch.

Cuisine: American

Total Time: 50 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
  • crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 6 yellow potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

Here's how to make it:

  1. Combine the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, oregano and crushed red pepper, if using, in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. Carefully insert a skewer through the center of each potato lengthwise. Put the potatoes onto a cutting board. Carefully cut an angled slit at the top of the potato. Keeping the knife steady, rotate the potato until spirals form. Make the spirals as thin as possible. Gently pull the potatoes to separate slightly.
  3. Put the potatoes into a baking dish. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Drizzle with the olive oil, then sprinkle with the seasoning blend.
  4. Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for about 30 minutes or until browned and crispy, turning occasionally.
