Nothing says fall quite like a candy apple. The thought brings up memories of fall leaves, pumpkins, hay rides, the New York State Fair, flea markets, hot apple cider, apple pie and trips to Vermont for leaf-peeping and more – all the things I love about fall.
I never liked the red coating myself, so as a kid I would choose caramel (OK, as an adult, too!). This caramel apple recipe is so easy that you can make them at home. No need to wait for a fair or carnival or fall festival. If you're nut free, just skip the nut coating. They're delicious either way. You will need 12 craft sticks for this recipe.

Ingredients
- 12 large Granny Smith apples, stems removed
- 2 packages (14 ounces each) individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 2 cups crushed peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans or cashews (optional)
Here's how to make it:
- Press a craft stick into the top, and almost through, each apple.
- Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes until caramels are melted, stirring once or twice during cooking time. Allow to cool briefly.
- Roll each apple in the caramel sauce, until well coated, then roll in the chopped nuts, if desired. Let apples set on baking sheet until cool.
