Award-Winning Barbecue Chicken Rub Recipe (7 Ingredients, 5 Minutes) by Donna John

My husband used to compete in barbecue cookoffs all over Texas. Brisket is his forte, but occasionally we try to cook a good barbecue chicken. Smoked and barbecued chicken can be tricky. You want the chicken moist, but with a crispy skin and the perfect spices on the outside. While we haven't mastered it yet, I have found a wonderful barbecue chicken dry rub recipe that has actually won awards at some of these championship cookoffs.
This award-winning BBQ chicken rub recipe has just the right amount of sweet, spice and smoke. It took me a while to get the secret recipe to share, but it was worth it. I was actually surprised at the simple ingredients that I already had in my kitchen. Nothing fancy, just done right.
You will need to hit your spice rack and pantry and grab the following ingredients: brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt, chili powder and smoked paprika. Whisk all the ingredients together and it is ready to be used in a multitude of ways
This homemade spice blend is perfect for smoked or barbecue chicken, of course. But my favorite way to use it is on baked chicken. The spice blend can also be used on pork chops, pork tenderloins and pork ribs. Soon I'm going to try it on a ribeye steak. Can't wait!

Ingredients
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
Here's how to make it:
- Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl. (Adjust the amounts to suit your tastes. I sometimes like to add a little black pepper to the mix. For some spice, add some ground cayenne.)
- Stir well to combine. Store in an airtight container, spice jar, mason jar or food storage bag. This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.
