"The Sound of Music" Tours in Salzburg, Austria: Are These Popular Tours in Europe for You? by Sheri B Doyle
A trip to Salzburg, Austria, isn’t complete without a Sound of Music Tour, or at least the travel books will tell you this. Tours are just not my thing and, to be honest, I wasn’t sure seeing the sights from "The Sound of Music" would be either. However, after a day of touring Salzburg, "The Sound of Music" fever hit. Deciding to visit the sights and take video for my nieces and nephew who are obsessed with the movie, I dedicated a day to create my own Sound of Music tour.
First, there were the fountains where the children learned to sing, and then the enchanting covered walkway with its vines intertwined reminding me of the romance of the movie. Walking through the garden, the large statues, fists reaching toward each other, were so beautiful, their grey hues contrasting against the beautiful colors of the flowers and trees of the garden. The majesty of the design, setting and size were mesmerizing. At this moment I was transformed.
As we visited the cemetery, the abbey, the cobbled streets and other monuments, I had to refrain from singing aloud the joyful songs filling my head. "The Sound of Music’s" romance, hope and love still lives in the landmarks and makes the romantic city of Salzburg one of the most special places in Europe.
If finding the landmarks on your own isn’t for you, the organized tours are a great option. There are several to choose from, many including a trip out to the home where the movie was filmed.
