Kids in the Classroom: How to Create Brain-Based Learning Environments

Fast-paced lifestyles, technology and a world of choices make students today different from previous generations. Unfortunately, many public schools still feel like the 1950s. This constant whirlwind challenges children's learning, especially when they’re forced to sit erect in rigid chairs all day. Many schools are adapting brain-based learning classrooms to help students collaborate, problem solve, make choices and think critically. The key components are:

  • Create a flowing classroom space
  • Use a variety of different shapes, sizes and materials for desks and seating
  • Research suggests monochromatic and muted color schemes
  • Reduce the amount of patterns and visuals
  • Natural light and/or incandescent lighting
  • Add plants/flowers
  • Declutter and/or hide supplies behind curtains/doors

Maybe it's time to bring this topic up at your child's school?
