Jetwing Lake Hotel: Being Green Doesn't Mean Being Bland in Dambulla, Sri Lanka

If you have ever thought being green means giving up on luxury, one night at Jetwing Lake Hotel in Sri Lanka will prove you wrong. The luxurious hotel sits unobtrusively in the local landscape of ponds, green grasses and wild animals. Even though it was built to have the least amount of impact on the surroundings, it has a huge impact on guests.

We were welcomed into the hotel with an exquisite drink and local flowers, then invited to sit in a beautiful open-air lobby amidst the mid-century modern custom furniture. Immediately any trace of the outside world was gone and I couldn’t have been happier.

Morning breakfast consists of buffets in multiple rooms, each food display a work of art. At night the open-air dining room fills with transcendent smells where Indian and Sri Lankan cultures blend together in the most amazing food combinations.

The quiet elegance of the rooms stood in stark contrast to the wilderness surrounding the hotel. The warm woods, huge windows and massive bathtub all looked out to the pool where quiet serenity was guaranteed.

Jetwing Lake’s biogas facility consumes any food waste that can’t be composted, and is used to create renewable energy for the hotel. All of the gray water is reused on the property to maintain the landscape. While staying at the Jetwing Lake, their dedication to the planet and its guests was superb. I can honestly say I have never found such peace and luxurious treatment anywhere in the world.
