Rehab Bar in Utila: The Perfect Place for an Afternoon Drink in Honduras (We Can Dream!) by Sheri B Doyle

At the edge of town, where the serene public beach begins, an institution stands in Honduras. In front a long colorful walkway, bright signs welcome the thirsty and the hungry. The rugged and colorful exterior compliments Rehab bar at the edge of the island of Utila in Honduras.
There are 12 steps leading up to the bar and restaurant. The walkway is decorated with different signs bragging that what happens in rehab stays in rehab, or encouragements like “Never Give Up.”
As we entered the beach bar, the hammocks at the end of the restaurants deck and in the “windows” were like advertisements for relaxation. Each one filled with a person reading, drinking, sleeping or just smiling at how good life can be. When the hammocks are empty the local kids will climb the hammock stands and jump into the warm turquoise waters of Utila. They practice their form and push each other to be more daring as the adults sit by sipping a cold drink and laughing at their bravado.
It isn’t unheard of for people to spend the better part of the day at Rehab, talking to the people, jumping in the water, resting in the hammock and taking in the beautiful view. The humble surroundings only add to the relaxed atmosphere and authenticity of the island.
