Fremantle Markets in Western Australia: Where History Meets the Present

The foundation stone for the Fremantle Markets, Western Australia's oldest market, was laid in 1897. It is one of the few buildings in Australia that continues to be used for its original purpose. In 1897, visitors to the markets arrived by horse and cart; today you can catch the train from Perth and walk up from the station or ride the free cat bus.

The streets between the station and the markets are lined with interesting shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. The markets have over 150 stalls, selling a unique range of items from fresh produce to tasty takeaway food from different cultures for lunch, to jewelry, T-shirts, home furnishings, glasses and much more. The markets have a great atmosphere and are free to enter, which makes it a fun place to visit even if you’re on a budget.

There are sideshows and buskers providing entertainment in and around the markets, and there are also hosted events on site throughout the year. The markets are open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Monday public holidays. Allow yourself a few hours to enjoy the markets and sample the wares!
