American Club: A Romantic Weekend Getaway in Kohler, Wisconsin

Adult weekend getaways are meant to be just that – a getaway from everything in our normal routines. The American Club hotel in Kohler, Wis., is just the place to truly step away from reality. Set in the most serene area, The American Club feels like stepping back in time, or actually, out of time.

The American Club began in 1918 as a dormitory for workers at the Kohler factory and their families. The dormitory had a barbershop, bowling alley and pub. Families lived here for $27.50 per month, which included English language and citizen classes. In addition to the dormitory, which is now The American Club, the Kohler Village was built nearby. This village was one of the first planned communities built in America. The 50-year project was undertaken with the guidance of the Olmstead Brothers who designed Central Park. Visiting The American Club and Kohler Village now one still gets the sense of that great American spirit.

The intention was to spend the weekend exploring the city of Sheboygan, the river, Kohler Village and the rest of the hotel. However, after I dipped my toes in the luxurious Jacuzzi bathtub I spent much less time outside of the room than anticipated. The room and bathroom are pure luxury, so it was very difficult to find reasons to crawl out of the amazing bed and leave the comfort of the warmly decorated room.

We did manage to see the village, visit the Kohler showroom and hangout in the Horse & Plow historic tavern and enjoy the time away from real life. As the time to leave and return home drew closer I found I had to pull myself back to reality, out of the time when life was simple and meant to be enjoyed in a leisurely fashion. It is a weekend I will never forget, where my husband and I were able to reconnect, get refreshed and unwind in absolute luxury.

I’ve heard of the American Club but haven’t been yet. Adding it to my list, thanks

It is so cool to see how many people have been to The American Club and how many want to go. I love it that our history is alive and well.
