Hometown Travel & Staycations: 3 Reasons I Am a Local Tourist & Why You Should Be, Too

There's nothing like escaping on a plane to some far-off land to discover life in another part of the world. I love traveling and experiencing a different way of life even if it's only for a very short time. My love for travel has led me to look no further than my own backyard: local cities, that is!

Viewing where you live as if you don't actually live there makes you think about it in a different way. Where would you go if you only had one week? Here's why I love being a local tourist and why you should, too:

  • You discover gems that you never knew existed before like tea time at a local Victorian home open to the public to explore.
  • You finally try that restaurant you have always wanted to go to but never did.
  • You look for events and mark your calendar to attend. Charles Dickens festival, anyone? Hello, that's a real thing!

Becoming a local tourist opens the doors of adventure. The best part of it is that you don't have to go too far to find it! Even if you think you've seen it all because you live where you grew up, it doesn't really mean you explored all there is to see. So, pretend you're someone else and plan a trip to your hometown.

My friend and I are local tourists all the time. We are always looking for new things to do in our town. Restaurants, unique places, events ... you name it. You can always find something new and interesting to do! Gina Jackson-Holliday

My parents and grandma and aunts just did the downtown tunnel system today. We need to explore them sometime!

Yes! I love stay-cationing, exploring, etc. You just need to remind yourself to try something new and get out of your rut. Love this perspective, Alice V !

I love this tip. It is so awesome to discover things in our own communities. I was always so excited to discover something new in our town or one close by. It was also great when people would come to visit, we would know of unique things to do or local places to go.

It's so true! It is actually amazing what you find out when you start googling stuff about your home town. It doesn't all come out in a community newsletter. Half the time you would never even hear about an event if it was outside your normal circle of operation.
