Celebrating a Milestone Birthday in Morocco: How We Rocked the Kasbah by Terri Kendrick

We went to the south of Spain for my 50th birthday. When my husband asked what I’d like to do on the actual day, I immediately said, “Casablanca!” (For no other reason than I loved the movie of the same name.) Alas, it was too far for a day trip, so we headed to Tangier instead.
Once in Morocco, our bus pulled into a parking lot, where a handful of dusty camels awaited us. I love animals, so my hand flew up when they asked who wanted to ride. However, this particular camel ride turned out to be more like a glorified pony ride, with the camel owner leading us around the parking lot ever so slowly and everyone taking photos. (Thrilling nonetheless!)
Once in Tangier, we headed to the kasbah where we were accosted by vendors yelling, “Lady, lady!” Resisting the wooden camels and Fez hats, we were, however, interested in the Moroccan rugs. While the rug merchants taught us a little of the history and craftsmanship of these vibrantly colored and patterned magic carpets, they dramatically unfurled hundreds of them before us. Although we didn’t find a rug, my husband went home with a handsome leather bag and I an amber ring.
I can’t even imagine how I’ll top this for my 60th!
