"Eat, Pray, Love" Inspiration in Bali: My Visit With a Medicine Man in Ubud by Sheri B Doyle
While visiting Ubud, Bali, I talked to my driver for the week, Dek from Bali Belly Tours, about seeing a local medicine man. I was inspired by Eat, Pray, Love, but didn’t want to go to a commercialized medicine man. Dek suggested I meet the local medicine man his family sees.
Since I am not Indonesian or Hindi I had to go to the medicine man and ask him if he could still see me. He had to meditate on it and see if he could still help me. He called Dek the next day to grant permission and make an appointment.
The next morning, a bit nervous, I sat outside the room of the medicine man. Dek had stopped and bought a beautiful floral offering for me to give for the gods and I brought a small monetary offering for the medicine man. It was decided Dek would go into the room with me so he could translate.
The three of us sat on the floor while the medicine man asked questions and gave me his thoughts. His gentle nature was calming and full of love. His insights were surprisingly accurate. He suggested I go to the temple for cleansing and blessing and gave instructions of what I needed to do.
As I left his small room I felt an overwhelming sense of love and peace. I was excited for the blessing experience as well as feeling enlightened by what he shared with me.
