Planning a Family Vacation? You’ve Made a Great Decision! Here’s Why!

When I was a kid my family went on vacation every year, even if money was tight. Some of my best childhood memories are from those trips; I remember them far better than I do any childhood toys. I want my sons to have the same memories.

According to child psychotherapist Dr. Margot Sunderland, such togetherness has major benefits for children. "Attachment play" with parents "enhances self-esteem, sending a child the psychological message: 'You have my full attention.'"

Family vacations have additional benefits for our kids – time de-stressing and bonding can even advance their brain development. So, if you’re deciding between buying your child the latest toy or going on vacation, “consider the profound effects on bonding and brain development; there is no competition.” Read more about family vacations and kids here!

Thank you for this Ann Marie, I needed a reminder of what really matters.

This is so so true! Parents are in the "memory making" business. And while a cool new toy or outfit may be immediately gratifying, the long-term effects of family trips will be remembered long after the toy or outfit is outgrown or forgotten. Thanks, Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead !

My pleasure, Ronnie Olesker & Elisa All Schmitz 30Seconds ! We just booked 4 days in VA Beach in July. It's not very far from us and it isn't very costly. It's the time together that matters.

I hear Abba and Neil Diamond songs in my head as I think about our annual trip to Branson or the long trips to Colorado. I even sat in front of Joan Jett when we flew to Disney. Treasured memories!

Katie Sloan: Those sound like the best childhood memories! :)

We are road trippers, and my hubby and I grew up with road trips as well... we know the value of that time together in the car and on the road... it makes the destination even sweeter sometimes!! We have done some big trips, like Chicago to LA and back... it takes a long time, but it is so worth it! Thanks for pointing this out Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead , the memories and time together are most important.

My son doesn't really like toys, but he does love trips! I was just planning one for this summer and now feel even better about the choice to take one.
Ann Marie Patitucci
Yes, Kim Kusiciel - so worth it! Whether a big trip or just a road trip 2 hours away (like my family's VA Beach trip this summer), it's the time together that the kids will remember!
Ann Marie Patitucci
Jamie Martin: Have fun with your planning! So glad this tip helped you to feel even better about it! 😊

Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead thanks for this reminder. We love traveling and seeing the sights with our kids! Our summer trips to Busch Gardens are our the highlight of our summer.
Ann Marie Patitucci
That's great! Now I need to start thinking of summer plans for my family, Heather Murphy-Fritz !

So true! My parents took me on holidays with them and I can remember those holidays more than I can remember any toy I ever had. Plus it introduced me to other cultures and different types of foods. I remember my school friends used to eat very plain foods compared to what I was accustomed to, and as a kid, I didn't realise that not everyone travelled.
Ann Marie Patitucci
That's so special, Fiona Whiley ! It was just what I was used to too. My Dad was an adventurer and he passed that on to me. I hope my kids also inherit the interest in other people and places. So far it looks like they have!
