Packing for Thanksgiving Trip: Why & How to Get Your Kids Involved by Eirene Heidelberger

When I pack for our family vacations I always get my kids involved. Why? Because I want to teach them the values of proper planning and the knowledge that tiny elves didn't pack their suitcases, as well as teach them crucial life skills for taking care of themselves when they grow up and move out of the house.

  • I begin talking to them two weeks prior about where we are going, what we will be doing, the weather and what they want to pack.
  • We use plastic zipper bags and pack a complete outfit in each one. Since the kids pack them themselves there's no complaining about what they will wear. Plus, it saves time when we are on the trip to already have the outfit ahead of time.
  • We put the dirty items right back inside for laundry when we arrive back home.

One thing I remember (always) is never go for a 2 days 1 night trip - it's simply not worth the effort to pack and unpack!
