Need to Reconnect With a Child? Try a Road Trip: 4 Tips From a Mom Who's Done It

Last month I was blessed to take a road trip with my youngest daughter. She had just finished her sophomore year of college out of state, and I was yearning to catch up and spend some dedicated time with her before her summer internship. It was a fantastic way to reconnect and one I'll never forget!

Here some of our suggestions for a great time:

  1. Be spontaneous! So many of our best stories happened because we had no set plans.
  2. Don't use devices, except for great music. It ended up we had little or no cell service so we just went with it, talked to locals and found plenty of fun "off the grid."
  3. Don't use the time for "serious" life talks or conversations. Relax and see what topics happen naturally.
  4. Journal about it and create a photo book of memories.

Most of all, just relax and enjoy this time with your (almost) grown child.

I've been wanting to take a road trip with my kids. Now thinking I need to plan three so I can have one-on-one with each of them! We often forget one-on-one time when they're older. Thanks for reminding us it's still important to do, Jan Mostrom!

I think if you can do it one on one it is so worth it!

I love this tip so much, Jan Mostrom! So happy you had this special time with Morgan, and I can't wait to do this with each of my kids. #bucketlist

Thanks Elisa! I absolutely loved it and can't wait to do it again and again with both girls! It is right up there with one of my all time favorite trips!

Love this Jan Mostrom! This year my gymnast Rachel who is 11 had her first travel meets this season. I'm so happy I got to take her to all of them. From LA, to Houston, to Little Rock. Gotta plan mini getaways with my son and the youngest two. In the meantime, I sometimes only grab one kid to go with me to get one on one time. It's hard with 4 kids they all want Mommy time LOL!
Jan Mostrom
That will be great time with Rachel! And yes, the other kids will want that special time too! I imagine with 4 kids you're a pro at planning! Have fun with them, time goes so fast:)m

I love this @janmostrom. I think a one-on-one trip is the greatest gift you can give a child. Hugh travels so often and now once a quarter I grab one of the 3 kids and take them with me and we follow him. It's awesome for their dad and I to spend that time with just one kid. It's also amazing to see the positive changes in the relationship of the two kids left at home.
Jan Mostrom
I never thought about the kids at home. That's such a good point!
