Pregnancy Week 6: Fetal Development, First Doctor Visit & Prenatal Yoga

About Baby

Your baby is growing as fast as he’ll run from you when he’s a toddler! Baby’s oversized head now has places forming for eyes, nose and mouth. Tiny arms and legs are beginning to emerge as buds on both sides. Intestines, the pituitary gland, bones, the brain and muscles are also works in progress. Last week Baby’s heart began to beat – this week it will develop a rhythm and has divided into two chambers (four will be the final number). And guess what starts to make its appearance? The umbilical cord. That’s big news because it will be Baby’s lifeline for the rest of your pregnancy. Oh, and your baby is the size of a lentil.

About Mom

Moody much? You could blame your partner, mom, the dog, the lady in the grocery store line, the person ahead of you who can’t drive, but the real culprit here could be your hormones, which are fluctuating (fluctuating you into a mood, right?). Now may be a good time to try prenatal yoga.

Seeing tiny spots of blood in your undies? Spotting is pretty common in early pregnancy, so don’t get too alarmed. Sometimes, however, it could be a sign of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy. Just to be on the safe side, always consult your doctor or midwife.

If you haven’t had your first prenatal doctor visit yet, you may be wondering what the heck is going to happen and how to prepare for it. Here’s a couple quick tips on preparing for the appointment:

  • In a sea of excitement and nervousness it is sometimes hard to remember everything! Make a list of questions you want to ask your healthcare provider. Maybe bring a support person to help you process the vast amount of information you will receive.
  • Ask your family members about their birth history and about any other pregnancy health concerns (or other medical problems) that may run in your family.

Let’s take an even closer look at what you may experience at that very first OB-GYN visit!

Considering prenatal yoga to combat some of that moodiness mentioned above? Whether or not you are new to yoga or a yogi adept, a prenatal yoga class is highly recommended. Here are just a few of the reasons:

  • The community of moms you will meet is priceless.
  • Allows you to exercise safely.
  • Provides for stress relief.
  • Gives you important self-care when you need it most.
  • Your prenatal yoga teacher will be a source of wisdom for you.

Wait! That’s not all. There are even more reasons to sign up for a prenatal yoga class.

Already practice yoga? During the first trimester many women can and do continue with their normal yoga practice. Here are some tips:

  • Check with your prenatal health care provider. As long as you have the green light for normal exercising, prenatal yoga is a great place to start – or continue.
  • Let your yoga instructor know that you are pregnant so adjustments can be made as needed. As long as you are healthy and your pregnancy is going well during the first trimester, you will find that you will need to make few, if any, adjustments. Use your common sense and avoid anything extreme while pregnant.
