Struggling & Troubled Times: Why It's OK to Get Real on Social Media Motherhood

The other night I posted on social media that I was feeling down. I am generally a positive person, but at the moment I was struggling. I wanted to be honest about that because I think it’s important to share not only the good or seemingly perfect things about ourselves on social media, but the “real stuff,” too. I also suspected that others might be feeling the same way. I shared this:

“Is anyone else just feeling down? Between the horrors of the world and general stress exacerbated by the horrors of the world and lack of sleep and sick kids, I just feel so down. I'm trying to maintain perspective. I am privileged and blessed, and I know it. Sending love to everyone who needs it and praying that things get better.”

I was amazed by the response. Nearly 100 people reacted to the post and dozens commented. Some offered kind and encouraging words; others said they felt the same. One friend shared an especially helpful quote: “Note to self: You do not have to continuously monitor all the disaster and heartbreak in the world. You are not in charge of outrage and grief. Witness it. Feel the feelings. Take action. But remember, love is where you live.” – Nanea Hoffman

I’ve been thinking a lot about these wise words. They’ve been helpful to me. I hope they help you, too.

Hope you’re feeling better @amghalstead. Yeah. Nix the news. It’s not the truth anyway.

Thank you for your forthrightness, it’s so reassuring to know when you’re not the only one struggling. I quit watching the news 20 yrs ago and tv a few yrs ago, but got caught up in watching every press conference of the Vegas shooting on YouTube. Then I realized a few days later how it was bringing me down too and besides it was the same old, same old of grasping for straws to have something to take up air time. So I quit! And like you, my daughter had corrective back surgery 10 days before so I was already emotionally depleted. Nanea nailed it though, now if more people could read it. Is it ok for me to repost on my social media? Thanks again
