Want the Secret to Get Your Teen to Help Out Around the House? (Hint: It’s Something You Probably Gave Your Toddler) by Susan Campbell Cross

I'm a lifestyle expert, but also the mother of three teenagers! One thing I've learned about teens is...

Teens do not like to be told what to do!

To get my teenagers to help around the house, I offer them choices or options. For example, if the garbage needs to be taken out, I say, "You can take the garbage out before dinner, or after dinner." They will pick the option they prefer, and the chore gets done. It's the best way I've found to keep the peace and keep them helpful.

You must not have the normal teenager. Of course my teens would pick after dinner. One more reason to put it off. Then after dinner they rush to there room, saying I will be right back. An hour later I would pop my head in their room and they would claim they have homework or a test due in the morning.
