Death of the Queen: Ways to Cope With Grief As We Mourn the Passing of Queen Elizabeth ll

Why are people around the world so sad about the death of a woman they've never met? Holidays and headlines are often triggers for recent and even years-old grief, bumping old memories lost at unexpected moments, and the death of a public figure such as Queen Elizabeth II will likely press against the losses of even non-royal watchers in the days ahead.

Those who lost friends and family during the pandemic may be surprised to feel resentment at witnessing an outpouring toward this very public, yet virtual stranger, when health and government restrictions prevented celebrating the life and passing of their loved one. Accept it as an additional layer of loss attached to your own. Maybe this is an opportunity for additional processing with those who share your loss.

Losing someone close to you is tough, and grief is something that all of us must experience at some point in our lives. Speaking out about personal experiences of loss can help others who are going through the same whirlwind of emotions.

With all the additional stressors of these past few years, our coping skills are seriously taxed. It may feel even harder to process painful feelings, leaving us unprepared when confronted by the emotional pain of others. This is a good moment to look at how to "do no harm" and hopefully provide comfort to us and others feeling loss. Not everyone will understand; there's no empathy download available for the uninitiated. You learn by experience, and you will one day have that gift to share with others.

The lines to view her lying in state are 5 miles long. That says everything.

There's been so much grief these last few years because of COVID. Losing the queen has felt like a massive loss on top of all of that. She was a constant shining star in so many of our lives, and now we have one less light in the world.
