Creative Fall Décor: How to Combine Pumpkins & Mums for Autumn Decorating

I love decorating the house for fall – inside and out. And am always looking for creative new ways to celebrate the season with my kids.

As we were putting out our pumpkins, spiders and scarecrows a few years ago, I noticed a beautiful idea on my neighbors' front steps. They are incredibly nice people, so I didn't think they'd mind me passing on this great tip!

They hollowed out their pumpkins and used them as planters for their mums! I thought it was such a lovely way to combine two fall favorites, so I snapped a picture to share with you (see image below). What do you think?

What a cute idea, Elisa All Schmitz 30Seconds . I buy mums every year and always just plant them in a pot for a centerpiece. Going to plant them in pumpkins this year! After they've bloomed, I plant them in the ground. They bloom all summer and into the fall. So don't throw them away after the blooms fade. My yellow mums are blooming now.

Gorgeous, Donna John ! I have to get started on my fall gardening!!

Im needing to know how to keep the ants/insects out of my pumpkin that i planted a mum in? Anyone have solutions to this issue?
Elisa Schmitz
That's a good question, Brandi Wright . I know some people use shellac or other spray to prevent insects and rodents from eating their pumpkins. I guess that way, the pumpkin just becomes a more plastic-like container for the plants. Sad to do that to a live pumpkin, but I guess it's already dying anyway. :-( I hope you enjoy it while it lasts! Happy Fall.

This would make a beautiful centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table.
