Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten? 6 Things Parents Need to Know! by Mindy Hudon, M.S., CCC-SLP

Every child develops at his or her own rate, but typically a 4- to 5-year-old should be able to communicate easily with other children and adults. A child at this age is able to:

  • pay attention to short stories
  • answer simple questions
  • understand the majority of what is said at home and school
  • tell stories while maintaining a topic
  • use detailed sentences with mature grammar
  • say most speech sounds correctly (but may still have problems with L, R, V, S, Z, Ch, Sh and Th)

Keep these things in mind as your child gets ready for kindergarten.
