#OnePillCanKill: An Important Public Safety Alert About Fake Prescriptions & Fentanyl From the DEA by Ann Marie Patitucci

As a college professor and parent of a teenager, I feel called to share this important news with as many people as possible:

The DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) has issued a Public Safety Alert, warning Americans – of all ages – of the alarming increase in the availability, not to mention the lethality, of fake prescription pills containing methamphetamine and fentanyl. The alert is in combination with the launch of the DEA’s One Pill Can Kill public awareness campaign. The goal of the social media campaign is to raise awareness about the dangers of counterfeit pills and to urge citizens to take only medications prescribed by medical professionals and dispensed by licensed pharmacists.

The DEA’s campaign is a response to the significant national surge in counterfeit pills that are mass-produced by criminal drug networks and marketed as legitimate prescription pills. These deceptively marketed pills are killing unsuspecting Americans at a rate never seen before.

We can all help to increase awareness of the dangers of counterfeit pills by sharing/retweeting posts from @DEAHQ and the DEA Field Division Twitter and Facebook accounts. We can also create our own social media posts by using some of the sample posts, information and/or graphics included in the campaign.
