'Tis the Season to Be Overwhelmed: A Mindfulness Exercise That May Help With Holiday Stress

The holidays can be overwhelming: organizing get-togethers with family and friends, choosing and buying gifts, decorating and planning to make everything special for loved ones. I have a simple “energy hack” to regain calm when you feel overwhelmed.

So often, holidays can turn out to be hectic and overwhelming rather than relaxing. Here is quick and calming mindfulness exercise for when you feel like you need a break – and all you need is a pen, paper and gratitude.

  1. Take a seat, close your eyes and breathe slowly.
  2. Focus on the here and now.
  3. Ask yourself: “What is something that makes me feel overwhelmed today?” Write it down.
  4. Then ask yourself: “What am I grateful for right this second?” Again, write it down.

Whenever I do this, I am amazed by the fact that many times, the thing that was making me feel overwhelmed suddenly becomes smaller and the list of all that I’m grateful for becomes so much bigger.
