Taking Care of Seniors & Elderly Family Members: 3 Priorities for Senior Mental Health & Well-being

When you are taking care of a senior relative, their health and well-being should be your main priority. Nobody wants to see their relatives in pain or having a hard time, but unfortunately, our health might naturally deteriorate as we get older, both physically and mentally.

For many older people, a decline in mental health might be a result of feeling lonely and unable to take part in the activities that they once enjoyed, or anxiety regarding their physical health. Seniors are at a higher risk of suffering from issues like depression or anxiety, especially if they spend a lot of time on their own and are no longer able to get involved with as many of their favorite activities as before.

Here are some of the main things to provide a senior in order to help with their health and well-being:

1. Social Life

Staying social is one of the most important things for seniors in terms of beating loneliness and staying happier into old age. Studies have found that seniors who spend a lot of time around other people, and have plenty of different opportunities to socialize throughout the week, are less likely to suffer from depression or anxiety compared to seniors that are spending the majority of this time alone. Spending time with friends is important to help seniors keep up with what they enjoy, while the amount of time spent with family has been shown to have a direct impact on a senior’s mental health and well-being. Find out why social communities are so important for seniors.

2. Independence

As they get older, many people are not going to be able to stay as independent as they once were, usually because of health concerns. While some seniors might require more support and help with everyday tasks and might find themselves relying on other people more often compared to in the past, it’s important to do whatever you can to help them remain as independent as possible. Assisted living facilities, for example, might be a great alternative to a nursing home for seniors who might need a little bit of extra help, but don’t want to give up their independence.

3. Healthy Lifestyle Habits

Healthy lifestyle habits such as exercisingeating well and getting regular sleep are important for seniors to stay healthy and well, in both aspects of physical and mental health. When it comes to improving mental health for seniors, exercise is important not only because it gives seniors the chance to get out and meet new like-minded people to improve their social life, but it also can keep them physically strong and mentally happy for longer. More and more senior exercise classes are being started around the country to help with combating the issue of depression in seniors.

Looking after an elderly relative means putting their health and happiness first. When it comes to senior mental health and well-being, these are some of the actions you can take that make the biggest difference.

We are already having to think about this. It's so true that seniors need to as active -- physically and mentally -- as they can. Great article.

Great read! This article has taught me so much about the importance of mental health even in seniors. It emphasizes the importance of social connections, cognitive stimulation, and healthy habits as three priorities for senior mental health and well-being. This is definitely something I can apply to my grandparents as well. Right now they are currently in retirement homes, living their best lives. My family and I are at ease knowing they are properly cared for and given the attention they need there. If you're looking for retirement homes for your loved ones, I suggest browsing at . Hope this helps!
