Hospitals are cold. Deployments are long. A blanket may seem like a simple gift, but think how much warmth and comfort your favorite blanket provides for you when you are cold or lonely. The national nonprofit Soldiers’ Angels is helping crafters and volunteers share that cozy feeling with veterans and deployed service members through their annual Blanket Drive.

The Soldiers’ Angels Blanket Drive is currently collecting new blankets of any kind (store bought, handmade, no-sew, etc.) to distribute to veteran patients in VA Hospitals and ship to service members deployed overseas.

Veteran and burn survivor, Michael Lammey, says that a Soldiers’ Angels volunteer provided him a blanket folded up inside a “bag of kindness” when he was recovering from severe wounds that covered over 56 percent of his body. “Someone comes in and gives you this gesture from out of the blue, and it changes the emotions inside you. That’s huge for someone recovering from something as painful as a burn injury or an IED explosion,” Lammey said.

Although not required, volunteers are encouraged to include a “thank you” card attached to the blanket to show their personal appreciation for the recipient’s service to our country.

The Soldiers’ Angels Blanket Drive collection dates are from July 1 through August 31, 2021. As of the date of this article, the drive has only received 283 blankets. With a goal of collecting 2,000 blankets in 2021, the organization is in need of your support to meet that goal.

For a quick and easy way to support the drive, purchase a blanket from the Soldiers’ Angels Blanket Drive Wish List.
